WINTER RIDE PART TWO

Your Hands

Your hands are often the first parts of your body to feel cold and the first to go numb, impacting the control of your bike. Most people don’t understand why they get cold.

If you’re wearing windproof, waterproof, insulated gloves and your hands still get cold, it’s not because you need to wear more layers or bulkier gloves but rather it’s because your body is keeping all its warm blood in your trunk to keep your organs up to temp. In short, your hands are cold because your torso is cold.

To prevent this, it’s often a case of better insulating or heating your torso. Put on an extra insulation under your jacket (fleece, sweatshirt, or liner) seal off drafts better, cover your neck and tuck in your sweatshirt. If that’s not enough, look into a heated jacket or vest, (we even have ones that run on its own battery so no over taxing a old charging system.) Most of the time, a heated jacket alone will be enough to keep all of your body warm. By keeping your core temperature up it will keep your warm blood actively pumping around your entire body, including your hands.

Another helpful fix is to remove your hands from the air stream this doesn’t change the theory of core body temperature. ATV hand mitts are great. With hand mitts, you can ride in lighter gloves in any weather, you’ll just look a little odd but your warm hands will more than make up for that, and they can come off fast when temps warm up or you park the bike and don’t like the look. Your legs are less important for overall warmth, but there’s no reason they should be cold and uncomfortable. Start with sweatpants, fleece, thermals, or jeans if you’re planning on wearing winter over pants. If you’ve riding in regular jeans, now is the time to add knee armor or chaps. In addition to protecting you from impacts and abrasion, knee armor does a fantastic job of blocking airflow over a very exposed and thinly insulated part of your body.

Last are your feet. When you’re picking out socks, height and fit are most important. A tight fit keeps blood from lingering in your feet and calves where it loses heat and if one pair doesn’t do the trick, then add thick boot socks. Boots are even easier. Just about anything that isn’t a racing or summer boot will be reasonably water and wind proof and if yours are leather, it’s easy to add Mink oil and beeswax. For even better weather protection upgrade to a Gore-Tex lined boot.

Outer Shell

One of the best ways to go is a motorcycle specific jacket and pants combo or one-piece suit. In addition to regular motorcycle things like impact protection and abrasion resistance, you should wear something that’s wind and water proof as your outer ware to keep the heat in.

Despite what hard-core rider will tell you, operating clutch and brake levers with frostbit is incredibly painful it dose not make you hard just unprepared. Arriving with pale blue hands and a bad mood is no way to take a ride that you should and can enjoy

Well it almost always happens. It's when you combine Gold Wingers (bikers), good food, better stories, and great friends. So what do you get? A whole lot of fun, what else. Thursday night, November 3, is when it happened. Bobby Manning, with his better half Alice, as chapter directors of NC-D (the DownEast Gold Wings) do a great job. We had a pretty good turn out at the meeting with our regulars and some visitors we had not seen in a while. A little joking (with a lot of laughs), many door prizes, and 50/50 drawings make for a very enjoyable gathering. Preacher Cliff does an auction that has a especially funny spend. He auctions off precious and valuable items (the kind of collectibles that fall out of the closet) and the money raised from the auction goes to the Ronald McDonald House. Of course there is a serious side to the meetings, such as, we discuss safety issues (like deer and other animals out to get us); technical advice (like keeping your tire pressure checked - colder temperatures greatly reduces your tire pressure); and special concerns for members and friends. Chapter NC-D is an active chapter that does a lot of good things for the community and the motorcyclist while having fun.

Come on out and visit with us at the Golden Corral on the 1st Thursday of each month. Be prepared to have fun and a great meal with a friendly bunch of Wingers.

WINTER RIDE TIME PART ONE

Have you ever been cold on a ride? If you answered no you only ride on sunny days in the summer. The rest of us know that even if it’s 55º out, you can still freeze your butt off. Here’s how you can stay warm and ride year round.
Layers
It’s the obvious answer but in practice, layering effectively is not something that just happens. The goal is to get maximum warmth with minimal bulk. Adding clothes until you look like the Michelin man probably won’t keep you as warm as a few well chosen items.
Layering for motorcycle riding is much different than what you would do for other cold weather activities. Cruising down the freeway at 55 mph is not an intense physical activity though. You’re sitting motionless for miles, and when you do move, it’s small movement of the right wrist, two fingers pulling a brake lever, or a flick of your left ankle to shift gears. None of that is going to generate any heat.
What you need your clothing to do then is retain the heat your body produces at rest and insulate your extremities from the cold. Start with something very thin and close fitting soft cotton long-sleeve t-shirts. Next add tight fitting fleece pull-over or a sweatshirt. Under a warm jacket with a liner something with a windproof, waterproof shell.
One area you shouldn’t forget about is your neck. This is a major area of heat loss for motorcyclists. It’s easy to cover pullover neek wrap with something made with windstopper material is best, that way you only need the one layer there.

My trip to the Great Smokies via Gold Wing...
WOW - how time flies. It was just yesterday (it seems) when I was getting ready for our annual, last of the riding season, vacation trip. Most people, who don't know me ask - "Are you going to ride your motorcycle on your vacation?". Yep, been doing it for 30 years. Been so many places, seen so many things, and met so many interesting people while vacationing on a motorcycle. Well, back to this years ride. We (Wayne Cox, Connie Cox, [my better half] Shirley, and yours truly) met at our watering hole, Hardee's at Bell's Fork, for a biscuit and beverage on Friday, September 23. Most of the regulars in Hardee's commented that it was looking like rain. We agreed but that's just part of the ride, whether we like it or not.
We were doing okay until just west of Greensboro. Then it happened - liquid sunshine. We rode the Gold Wings hard enough to catch clearing skies and dry highways around Statesville, then fair sailing all the way to Maggie Valley. We rode the back roads for a couple of days in the beautiful mountains around Maggie Valley (western NC and eastern TN) and even managed to visit "Joey's" with it's delicious pancakes and the fixings. The leaves had started to change but they were to peak around mid October.
Next, we were on the super scenic "Blue Ridge Parkway". Terrific mountains, terrific road and terrific friends on a terrific motorcycle. If it wasn't for that fog, it would have been really terrific - terrific. The next few days were truly enjoyable and relaxing. We stayed at the K.O.A. Campground in Boone,NC (this K.O.A. is the highest in altitude east of the Mississippi). We did some riding, quite a bit of eating (Connie is a great cook and Wayne is one grilling dude), and a lot of relaxing. But as usual, our vacation was coming to a close and we were to leave the next morning for home. Wayne went down to the K.O.A. store and returned with a news flash. The higher altitudes around Boone were to get 1 to 2 inches of snow with winds of 40 to 50 mph. We quickly decided it was time to leave, like right now. So at 12:30PM, on Friday September 30th, we started packing up, putting up, and locking up the camper. We departed, at 1:30PM, in the sunshine for the trip back home.
Great ride back home until we reached Durham. It was around 5 o'clock when the sunshine liquefied and every four wheeled in the Durham area decided it was time for them to get on I-40. I don't know which was worse, the rain or the traffic. All I know was that we did not like it at all. We finally Winged our way through all the rain and all the traffic when we reached Zebulon. Got to house about 8:00PM. Thanks to the good Lord and the Gold Wings, we made it safe and sound. Well since time is flying, we are one month closer to our next trip. It surely will be here before you know it.
Oh yeah, it was nice having those new Dunlop E-3s, Kuryakyn highway pegs, and Frogg Toggs.It's great to feel safe on new tires in the rain, comfortable in the saddle, and dry in the ????.

winterizing your bike

remember, if your not going to be riding this winter, fill your tank all the way up and put some fuel stabilizer in it, next get a battery tender and plug in the bike to help maintain your battery while not in use ( a good one will de-sulfate and keep your battery at its maximum readiness), and thats just the basics. AMA announces 2012 national numbers for Supercross, Motocross

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) today announced the 2012 national numbers for pro-licensed riders competing in Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, and the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship for the 2012 season.

All riders must use the assigned national number for competition as listed. In addition, the current champion must run the No. 1 plate when competing in the class or region in which the No. 1 plate was earned. When competing in a class outside of the class where the championship was earned, the rider must use the assigned national number.

Gas prices fall from September

The national average retail gasoline price has fallen 5.9 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.46 per gallon, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

The national average has decreased 20.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 73.3 cents per gallon higher than one year ago.

"Motorists are certainly delighted that average gasoline prices are at their lowest since early March, but compared to prices a year ago, motorists are still feeling a pinch at the pump," said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com senior petroleum analyst. "It's great to see gasoline prices falling, but at the same time, prices a year ago were nearly 75 cents less per gallon. The good news is that over the upcoming weeks, there will continue to be factors that could put more downward pressure on oil and gasoline prices. I continue to expect that average gasoline prices will bounce between $3.25-$3.50 for much of the rest of 2011.”

Identify potential hazards now before they become a big problem.
You can't predict how sudden severe weather could damage your property. However, you can minimize risk and prevent damage by preparing for the worst.
Some things to look for regarding trees on your property:

Cracks in the trunk or major limbs
Hollow, aged and decayed trees
One-sided or significantly leaning trees
Branches that hang over the house near the roof
Close proximity of utility lines

Prepare your property with the power of STIHL
Once you recognize problem trees, don't hesitate to take steps to correct the problem:

Remove dead, diseased and damaged limbs
Consider removing trees with large cavities of decay
Leaning trees may indicate a root problem; have them inspected
Branches too close to your house, a building
or the street should be pruned to provide clearance

Branches that are too close or touching utility lines need to be pruned or
removed. If this work is needed, report it to your local utility company —
DO NOT prune the tree yourself

BOISE, Idaho - Shortly before a large crowd of WPS sales and vendor reps was to descend on the company's headquarters for a BBQ lunch, company president and CEO Craig Shoemaker had an announcement to make.
Could the large crowd split into two halves and leave a large lane of asphalt between them, Shoemaker asked over a bullhorn. The groups' curiosity was piqued. After all, this was the distributor's 2011 sales meeting, there was bound to be a grand announcement of some kind.
Two helmet-clad motorcyclists rolled up to the strip between the murmuring crowd. Some water was poured under their back tires. The riders lit up their motors, spun the revs high and among billowing plumes of red and blue smoke, WPS introduced the Shinko Smoke Bomb.
Already common in the automobile aftermarket, tires that emit colored smoke when spun are new to the powersports industry.
The Smoke Bomb is based on the Shinko 005 Advance Radial — it has the same tread design as the 005 and a similar intermediate rubber compound. It also features Kevlar belting as do all Shinko Advance tires.
The tires are DOT approved and come in 180/55ZR17 and 190/50ZR17 sizes. They are available in blue, red and purple smoke colors. The color change in the smoke happens when the tire reaches a specific temperature during the burnout process.

What a wonderful ride into to Ron Ayers this morning. It was nice to get a brake and ride today pulled out about 30 min early just to get my ride on after a long hard weekend.

Saturday got out the Stihl chain saw and cut and hauled home about four more tons of Oak.

Monday got out the log splitting gear and spent the day hand splitting the soft wood and using the Troy-Bilt Honda powered log splitter for the hard stuff down to around 2 ton of wood split this week most of it the Oak and Gum.

I did plan to ride Sunday but I had used a none OEM filter on the VN1500 last oil change and it has a leak around the filter so it will have to set till I get a new Kawasaki oil filter for it today. Never use auto parts house filter again. Had to do the oil change on a weekend and did not have a filter from work I should have just waited.

Just got this in and like it a lot and only $20
I have put this on three bikes VN1500 with ISO grips KZ700 with PROGRIPS and a Honda Rucks NPS50. Did miles on the VN and Rucks with is holding the speed, the KZ would drop down some after a few miles but never more than 3 or 4 mph. I like how clean this look and the way I can take it off and move it to the next bike I jump on with out having to get one for each and every bike just one for the 7/8 and one for 1 inch bars.

Motorcycle Cruise Control
The Cycle Guys have introduced the new GoCruise throttle control for street bikes. It maybe one of the simplest motorcycle cruise control device available, made possible through the use of modern composite material technology.
In use, the GoCruise is fairly straight forward, it slips over the throttle grip on your motorcycle, taking up a quarter-inch of space.
When you are ready to engage the cruise control, simply throttle-up to your motorcycle to the desired speed and set the GoCruise against the front brake lever with your forefinger, and you're done.
It eliminates the need to keep a constant grip on the throttle. When you want to slow down, just roll the throttle forward and the GoCruise releases and adjusts back to the off position.
The GoCruise composite material is formulated to act like a spring, with just the right amount of tension to grab a motorcycle grip just the right amount.
There are no switches, no moving parts, no hardware to install, and it can be put on or taken off the street bike in seconds.
